Last week, we had the opportunity to host our very first summer camp—and what a week it was. From the barn to the arena and everywhere in between, the week was filled with personal and equestrian growth. We were fortunate to work with an amazing group of campers who brought enthusiasm, curiosity, and a willingness to learn each and every day.
While our campers spent plenty of time in the saddle, we want to take a moment to highlight the deeper value of the experience—the lessons, the character development, and the joy that emerged throughout their time with us.
Horsemanship & Horse Care
Each camper was assigned a horse for the week, and with that came daily responsibilities. Every morning, campers ensured their horse had hay, clean and full water buckets, and was properly groomed before saddling up for the day.
They quickly learned an important lesson in responsibility: even when tired, hot, or sweaty, the well-being of their horse comes first. This hands-on experience gave them a deeper appreciation for the dedication and work that goes into horse care. We’re proud of how each camper rose to the occasion.
Equine Education: Building Knowledge
In addition to riding, campers participated in daily educational sessions to deepen their understanding of horses and horsemanship fundamentals. Key topics included:
Parts of the Horse: Through an interactive session that involved painting the horses, campers learned the various parts of the equine body. This creative approach also emphasized safe handling and awareness around horses.
Tack & Equipment: Campers took a midday break to learn about tack, including the importance of regularly inspecting it for wear or damage. By the end of camp, they could confidently identify the main parts of a saddle and headstall.
Coat Colors & Markings: To close out the week, campers explored different horse coat colors. Thanks to our lesson ponies, they were able to identify examples of greys, buckskins, paints, palominos, roans, sorrels, bays, and more—providing a hands-on learning experience.
Life Skills Beyond the Barn
While equestrian skills were a major focus, we’re equally committed to helping campers grow as individuals. This week offered numerous opportunities for character development in areas that will benefit them far beyond the barn.
Communication: Spending full days together in a group setting taught the importance of clear, respectful communication. Campers learned to work through misunderstandings—skills that carried over into their interactions with both people and horses.
Friendship: What began as a group of mostly shy and reserved kids quickly transformed into a tight-knit team. By week’s end, genuine friendships had formed—ones we hope will last long after summer ends.
Creative Problem Solving: Whether it was constructing forts during lunch with limited supplies or figuring out challenges in the arena, campers had daily opportunities to think creatively and work collaboratively.
Looking Ahead
We’re incredibly proud of everything our campers accomplished during their time with us. Their progress—in horsemanship, in confidence, and in character—was a joy to witness. This first summer camp set the bar high, and we’re already looking forward to what the future holds.
Thank you to our wonderful campers and their families for trusting us with this experience. Until next time, enjoy the ride!
